B y I soon learned that even though Mrs. Sullivan couldn't always get out, she could most definitely call out! Although she couldn't attend serv- ices or meetings, she was a very active member. If there was a meet- ing reminder or a need to contact church members, it was Mrs. Sulli- van who went into action. One quick call from a committee chair or the church secretary and the message went out to all who needed to receive it. Of course, we now have email, B ack in the day, I was a Pioneer! No, not crossing the prairie—it was the name of our church youth group. Don't ask me why. I have no idea. But it was during that time that I became aware of Mrs. Sulli- van. She was a longtime member of our congregation and the grand- mother of Brent, another Pioneer. Up until that point, I had always recognized her, but that was the extent of it. As the years passed, so did my role in the church. I was no longer a Pioneer but a PW! Yes, time cer- tainly does fly! At one point, I became a PW circle chair, and Mrs. Sullivan was assigned to my circle. By this time, she was experiencing visual impair- ment, had difficulty walking and was homebound. For as familiar as her face was to me in my youth though, I didn't know how special she was. I went to visit her bearing gifts: a church bulletin, some cookies and my anxiety—whatever would we talk about, I wondered? Wow! What wasted worries! Mrs. Sullivan was "up" on everything! She ques- tioned me on my opinions of the latest sermon series, asked what I thought about the new church staff member and inquired whether I had read the Bible study lesson for that month. My head was spinning! How could she possibly know so much about everything going on in our church?! Bligh Jones is a member of Government Street Presbyterian Church.
